Gallop! Reimagined! is a Houdini recreation of the Scanimation technique found in Rufus Butler Seder's children's book of Gallop! (2007) (Figure 2). Rather than a physical printed page and acetate overlay, the effect is rebuilt procedurally in COPs using an animated ramp mask and rendered frames. This replicates the optical strip interleaving digitally, achieving the same illusion of a galloping horse (Figure 1).

General Structure:
The project is split into two animation sections, the book opening, and the horse Scanimation. Scanimation is an optical animation technique that creates the illusion of motion from static images. A sliding striped overlay reveals one frame at a time, creating the illusion of motion.

Why This is Procedural:
The strip interleaving is driven entirely by math. The animation is driven by a single parameter connected to geometry, and changing the number of frames only requires updating the ramp point and adding more File nodes. The rest of the system adapts automatically. The page turn physically controls the animation speed and direction.
